Welcome to ECOSYSTEMS!
This very important topic will help you appreciate how magical the Earth is and how lucky we are to live here. We will also learn how humans interact with Planet Earth and its ecosystems, and how it is our responsibility to protect and nurture this incredible place for generations to come.
ENJOY THIS VIDEO BELOW AS A REMINDER OF THE INCREDIBLE ECOSYSTEMS
THAT SURROUNDS US EVERY DAY..
What do you know about ecosystems?
NAME AS MANY AS YOU CAN!
What lives there? Who lives there? How do they live together?
What are the relationships inside ecosystems?
Who relies on what to survive? What are the energy systems at play?
BRAINSTORM IN YOUR BOOKS!
Ecosystems can be as large as a deserts or as small as pond.
Forests, coral reefs and grasslands are among the many ecosystems
found on Earth.
Let's consider some important aspects of ecosystems..

ECO 8.01 Understanding Ecosystems
ECOSYSTEMS are all the living and non-living parts of a particular area that function together.
SCIENTISTS CALL THESE BIOTIC (living) AND ABIOTIC (non-living) FACTORS.
READ page 3* of the textbook pdf, Chapter 10.1 'Ecosystems' and
Take notes on biotic and abiotic features of an ecosystem.
*This is the same as page 400 in the textbook.
This chapter can be found on the 'Ecosystems' homepage of this website or on the textbook link.
CHALLENGE!
Fire — living or non-living?
A fellow scientist wishes to publish an article that says fire is a living thing. Here is his argument.
“Fire can be observed to move and grows in size. It consumes energy and requires oxygen. One fire can reproduce more fire. It is concluded that fire is living.”
WRITE a note to the scientist that explains why his conclusion is incorrect. Use formal scientific language.
CHALLENGE!
Viruses — living or non-living?
Consider the following facts about viruses:
viruses are non-cellular; they are not made up of cells
viruses form crystals
viruses can reproduce only if they invade plant,
animal, fungal or bacterial cells
antibiotics have no effect on viruses even though they kill bacteria.
Do you consider viruses to be living or non-living. Why?
