Electron Configuration
Electron Configuration
KEYWORDS: electron configuration, shells, valence,
Let's watch this video below,
it is a great little summary of atoms.
It also introduces our next topic -
'electron configuration'
(how atoms are arranged).
A flame test can work to identify the metal ion (a charged particle) in a solution. The chemical compound (X Chloride) is heated and a coloured flame is made.
It can be deduced which metal ion is in the solution according to the colour released
when the solution is heated in a blue flame.
The colours are made when the valence electrons gain energy from the flame and move up from 'ground state' to the next energy level. They are said to be in an 'excited state' at this point. Shortly after, they will move back down to their original position ("ground state" again) and as they do this they release energy. This energy emission is seen as coloured light.
