THE LEMON BATTERY 🍋
The idea of the lemon battery is to:
create an electrical circuit (next week's learning)
show energy transformation (last week's learning!)
The lemon contains acidic juice called citric acid. This acts like an electrolyte. The electrolyte/juice helps to break down the copper and the zinc metals causing electrons to be released (*CHEMICAL REACTION*). The copper and the zinc are now called electrodes. They will allow the electrons to flow through them, they are excellent conductors of electricity!
The free flowing electrons found in the lemon juice naturally want to move from the negative to the positive electrode. HOW FAST THE ELECTRONS FLOW IS MEASURED AS VOLTAGE (V volts). With the red wire attached to the copper and the black wire to the zinc we will be able to see that the electrons are flowing that is an electrical current is being generated from the chemical reaction in the lemon!
The lemon battery will turn chemical energy (in the lemon juice) into electrical energy (in the wires of the circuit)... ... ENERGY TRANSFORMATION!!
